About the author

Deena Aboul-Hassan, a proud first-generation Lebanese American and currently in her third year of undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, has always held her Arab heritage close to her heart. Immersed in cultural traditions, festivities, and, notably, culinary customs from a young age, she has cultivated a deep appreciation for her roots.

Beyond her studies, Deena actively contributes to the Arab community, notably through her involvement in organizations such as the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA) and the Lebanese Student Association (LSA) on campus.

During her leisure time, you'll often find Deena cherishing moments with her family and lending a hand in the kitchen alongside her mom, where she continues to nurture her passion for Lebanese cuisine.

My Story

Food has always been a captivating subject for me, but my relationship with it took on a unique twist from a young age. Born with allergies to several common ingredients including dairy, eggs, nuts/tree nuts, salmon, lentils, and peas, navigating the culinary world wasn't always straightforward. While my classmates expressed sympathy during snack times, I never felt deprived. Thanks to my Lebanese immigrant parents, I was raised on a rich tapestry of delicious, allergen-friendly Lebanese meals.

Growing up, our kitchen was a sanctuary of warmth and aromas, where my parents' culinary prowess turned simple ingredients into feasts fit for royalty. Despite the dietary restrictions, I never felt like I was missing out. Instead, I developed a profound appreciation for the diverse flavors and ingredients of Lebanese cuisine, where every dish told a story of resilience and creativity.

Now, as a college student, my passion for food extends beyond mere enjoyment. As a kinesiology student, I've delved into the realms of well-being and nutrition, viewing food through both a biological and social lens. My allergies have fueled my curiosity about the intricate relationship between food and health, prompting me to explore alternative ingredients and innovative cooking methods. In my journey through academia, I've come to understand the profound impact food has on our bodies and communities. I've embraced the challenge of crafting nutritious and flavorful meals that cater not only to my dietary restrictions but also to the holistic well-being of those around me.

Through this blog, I hope to share my experiences, insights, and love for Lebanese cuisine with others who, like me, have navigated the intricate landscape of dietary restrictions. Together, let's celebrate the joy of cooking, the magic of Lebanese flavors, and the boundless possibilities that arise when we approach food with creativity and passion.

Thank you for joining me on this culinary adventure. Here's to savoring every bite and embracing the journey to well-being, one dish at a time.
